Every morning I sing a song to my daughter that I wrote when she was a few weeks old. It goes something like this:
Good morning, Baby Raya, how did you sleep?
Good morning, Baby Raya, did you rest without a peep?
Good morning Baby Raya, how were your dreams?
Good morning Baby Raya, were they as beautiful as they seem?
Good morning Baby Raya, are you ready to play?
Good morning Baby Raya, welcome to a brand new day!
Without fail, she starts to smile and sputter and shriek and shake. As I sang it to her yesterday morning, I really looked at her face as I got to the last line: there was pure joy and surprise at that moment, her eyes crinkled with wonder and her arms outstretched to receive. Even though she recognizes the song, she doesn’t expect it. In fact, she has no expectations. Unlike the rest of us, she goes to sleep and wakes up with no plans or anticipation. Each time she wakes up, she truly experiences a brand new day, full of possibility, discovery, and surprise. She will be just 10 months young tomorrow, and yet she teaches me each and every day how I should wake up and move through my own journey in life.
